How to Replace a COB LED Downlight Safely

When planning how to replace a COB LED downlight, begin with the old fitting’s code and physical opening, not a guess based on wattage. This practical guide helps you gather the details an installer and supplier need.

COB downlight replacement: compare code, cutout and output

Make the replacement safe first

A ceiling light can connect to mains electricity. Do not remove a fitting or touch wiring while power is on. If the old light must be disconnected, ask a qualified electrician to isolate and verify the circuit. People without electrical training should not attempt live wiring, repairs or changes to the circuit.

Before any work, note the room, ceiling type, fitting position and what you observe about the existing light. If it flickers, is damaged or has unusual wiring, stop and consult a qualified person. This article is a buyer’s checklist, not a repair manual or a substitute for electrical rules in your location.

Identify the old model and opening

If the old fitting label is readable, record its code, wattage and colour-temperature information. Photograph the label only if it can be done safely. Measure the ceiling opening across both directions, and note any irregular edges or visible gaps. A matching wattage does not prove a replacement will fit the same cutout.

The OVR catalog lists different size formats across COB families. Some variants provide cutout and outer dimensions; others provide a single Size O/D field. For example, Premium Cob rows show cutout values by wattage, while Prime Cob uses a size entry. Confirm the meaning of the exact field before treating it as a hole size.

Compare replacement models by exact code

Make a short list of possible OVR models using the family, wattage and code. The catalog includes Prime Cob 7W, 12W and 18W; Alix Cob 7W; Premium Cob 7W, 12W and 18W; and Vision (Delux) 12W. Their dimensions and listed fields are not identical. Use the product table to compare the code that matches your requirement.

Check the cutout and outside dimension where both are printed. Compare the shape and mounting arrangement with the space available, then ask the electrician to verify clearance and installation. If a field is absent or unclear, request clarification instead of using a number from a neighbouring model.

Check output and colour details

Review wattage, lumen information and colour-temperature options for the exact code. These values describe different properties: wattage is power, the lumen value is the catalog output entry and Kelvin options relate to light appearance. They cannot establish fit or prove that an old fitting’s driver and controls are compatible.

OVR lights are supplied with an OVR-branded isolated LED driver. An isolated driver separates mains input from the LED output side. The displayed driver label examples are not a map to specific COB codes. Check the output voltage and current against the replacement light’s requirements, and ask a qualified electrician before use.

Confirm the replacement order and installation

Before ordering, send the old opening measurements, selected OVR code, colour option, number of fittings and delivery city to the supplier. Ask for a written quote and verify the chosen size with the installer. Product cards display printed catalog MRP in INR; a bulk quote is a separate order-specific response.

After the electrician installs the replacement, keep the model code and invoice with the job notes. OVR Electric states that GST invoicing is available and LED products are supported by a two-year warranty. Ask for the warranty terms that apply to your order and contact route for later questions.

Avoid assumptions during a swap

Do not assume a different COB model shares the old opening, connector or output requirements. A change in family may change the listed size or colour options. Use product data and a qualified installer to confirm the fit. If the old product is damaged, preserve enough identification information to help the supplier understand what is being replaced.

A good replacement request distinguishes what you measured from what you still need confirmed. Write the opening size, old code if known, new catalog model and quantity separately. This makes it easier to settle the right product and quote before removing the old light or modifying a finished ceiling.

QUESTIONS / ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Can a COB downlight be replaced using the same wattage only?

No. Match the model dimensions, cutout, output requirements and installation conditions with a qualified electrician.

Should I disconnect the old COB light myself?

Mains wiring should be isolated and handled by a qualified electrician. Do not work on a live circuit.

Does the OVR driver label identify a matching COB code?

No. The driver label examples are not a product-to-driver compatibility map. Check output requirements for the exact light before use.

Need help with your product list?

Share the catalog model codes, quantities and delivery location. OVR Electric can respond to your specific request; confirm price, warranty and delivery details before ordering.
